V4 CAMSHAFTS – 1986-1990 HARLEY-DAVIDSON SPORTSTER XL
Harley Camshafts | The V4 Camshafts are performance camshafts specifically designed for the 1986-1990 Harley-Davidson Sportster XL models. These cams provide an effective upgrade for riders looking to enhance the performance of their Ironhead or Evolution (Evo) Sportster engines by improving power output, especially in the mid-to-high RPM range.
Key Features of the V4 Harley Camshafts
- Performance-Oriented Design:
- The V4 camshafts are engineered to increase valve lift and duration, which improves airflow into and out of the combustion chamber. This results in better performance and power gains, particularly at higher RPMs.
- The increased lift allows for more fuel and air mixture to enter the combustion chamber, leading to a more powerful explosion and thus more power output.
- Mid-to-High RPM Gains:
- These cams are ideal for riders who want to achieve more power in the 3,000 to 6,000 RPM range, making them suitable for aggressive street riding or track use.
- Provides a noticeable improvement in acceleration and overall engine responsiveness.
- Bolt-In Compatibility:
- The V4 camshafts are designed as bolt-in cams, meaning they do not typically require extensive modifications to the engine, such as machining or additional parts (like high-lift springs), for installation.
- Direct fit for 1986-1990 Sportster XL models, making the upgrade relatively straightforward.
- Improved Exhaust and Intake Timing:
- The cam profiles have been optimized to enhance both intake and exhaust timing, resulting in better exhaust scavenging and intake charging, which contributes to more efficient combustion and improved engine performance.

- Specifically designed for 1986-1990 Harley-Davidson Sportster XL models, including the Ironhead and Evolution engines.
- Direct fitment makes it an ideal choice for riders looking for an easy and effective performance upgrade without needing extensive engine modifications.
Installation Considerations:
- While these camshafts are considered bolt-in, it is essential to ensure that the pushrods and lifters are in good condition. Replacing worn components during the camshaft upgrade is advisable for optimal performance.
- If other engine modifications (like high-compression pistons or ported heads) are present, the camshafts can be tuned further for even greater gains.
- Tuning the carburetor or fuel injection system after installing the cams is recommended to optimize the air/fuel mixture and maximize the performance benefits.
Why Upgrade to V4 Camshafts?
Upgrading to V4 camshafts offers a significant performance boost, particularly for those who enjoy spirited riding or need more power for competitive events. The V4 camshafts help unlock the potential of the Sportster engine, improving its power delivery and making the motorcycle feel more responsive across a broader range of speeds.
Andrews Products performance cams are available for all EV Sportster engines. Many of the cams listed below will run to 6500 RPM with stock hydraulic lifters. H-D hydraulic lifters are very proven units, and Andrew’s recommend they not be changed to solid lifters. For lower lift EV Sportster cams, stock base circle sizes are used so stock, non-adjustable, pushrods can be used. Adjustable aluminum or chrome-moly steel pushrods are also available for higher lift applications. When purchasing camshafts be sure to make sure they are correct for your model, refer to your manual for cam replacement procedures, and be aware you will need to change intake and exhaust components to achieve maximum results. See below for camshaft specifications, and Additional Information for complete fitment information.
